Anyone want to do a little shopping? $50 gift card up for grabs!

2009 September 30

Remember when I mentioned I might have the opportunity to give one of my readers a $50 gift card to AJWright? Are you interested?

Let’s make this contest a bit fun…

As Little Dude is at the stage where he is communicating his feelings and needs quite well, I asked him what he would like to be for Halloween. His reply? “Little Dude.” (Okay, so he actually said his real name here.)

We talked about how Halloween is when you get to pretend to be something else, so then he said he wanted to be a “big boy.” I assured him he was one, so finally he looked at me and said he wanted to be “coffee.”

Yes, my 2 1/2-year-old wants to be coffee for Halloween. (And since neither the Hubby or I drink coffee, I believe we can thank my mom for influencing him.)

I waited until last night, and sat down with him and the computer. We browsed some of the costume Web sites, where I asked him if he wanted to be any of the costume ideas.

  • A lion? No.
  • A monkey? No.
  • Spiderman? No.
  • Superman? No.
  • A bear? No.Pumpkin
  • Handy Manny? No.
  • Rocket from Little Einsteins? No.
  • Mickey Mouse? No.
  • Hunter? No.
  • Postal worker? No.
  • Race car driver? No.
  • Football player? No.
  • Soldier? No.
  • Pirate? No.
  • Cat? No.

Finally, he saw it.

He wants to be Luke Skywalker. Well, he actually just wants to be something or someone with a lightsaber, so we are settling on a young Luke Skywalker/Jedi Knight.

Then I started pricing the costumes? Eek! More sticker shock hit me when I began to look at adult costumes.

Happily, thanks to Etsy.com, I was able to find a more reasonably priced alternative, and we’ll still be able to create a costume for him. One with pieces that will see more than a one-time use.

So here is the fun part of the contest. If you had an unlimited budget, what is one thing you would buy right now? One item only, though. If you received the $50 gift card to AJWright, how do you think you would spend it?

Here are the rules: (And I hope my blogging friends Kimberly and Maureen will forgive me, but as I’ve never had a contest on my blog before, I needed to use their rules as guidelines – remember to stop by their blogs to enter the contests they have going, too!)

  • First, leave a comment here, telling me about the one item on which you dream about splurging. And tell me if you received the $50 gift card to AJWright, how you think you would spend it.

Then, if you do any of the following things, and leave me additional comments letting me know you have done one or all of these things, I will award you additional entries:

  • Blog about this contest with a link to this page, maybe sharing the story behind the one item on which you wish you could splurge, or how you would spend a $50 gift card right now.
  • Follow me on Twitter (twitter.com/rchillsmith)
  • Tweet about this contest and include @rchillsmith in your tweet

I will use random.org to choose the winner on Friday, October 23. All entries must be received by midnight, CST, on Thursday, October 22. The winner will be notified by email and will have five days to respond with a valid mailing address.

Good luck!

(As for me, my splurge would be on a new chair for our living room. Or a painter to help us fix all the touch-ups on our walls. Or a playground set for Little Due. Yes, I’m bad at picking one place to splurge. And as for how I would spend $50 at AJWright? I think I could find quite a few more things.)

Okey dokey! So, if I could completely splurge, I’d go for a trip to Italy with my husband – just the two of us. Alone for DAYS. ;-) And if I win the AJ Wright card (I’ve never shopped there before, but I see they have shoes!), I’d look for a pair of flat boots. Both of my pairs of black fashion-y boots have to be resoled…and I’d rather just have new. ;-)

    • 2009 October 2

Ree – They had shoes galore. You would enjoy. And you would chuckle at a few of the selections, as we did.

  2. 2009 October 1

Unlimited budget? Any one splurge item? Hmm. That’s a tough one. Easy answer is something like “house” or “car” (since the unlimited budget implies no monthly payments…) but I’m not sure I’d really go that way. At this precise moment, I think I would spend it on jewelry – I have a friend who designs custom pieces, an I’d love to have the funds to be able to commission something.

And any one thing at AJ Wright? That would have to be shoes. (At least today. Liable to change tomorrow.) Not sure what kind. Something cute.

    • 2009 October 2

Custom jewelry? You are a girl after my own heart. How fun! As for what you would buy, I think you would enjoy the shoe selection they had.

I would love a new digital SLR camera. That would be the one item I would buy if money was no object! :)

    • 2009 October 2

Another splurge I could easily do. :-) My old Minolta (you know, the kind that uses actual film?) needs to be replaced with something digital at some point.

      • 2009 October 2

Ooh, a digital SLR. Another good choice.

i don’t know if i’ve ever been in an aj wright store. what do they have? if it’s the store i’m thinking, i may have to restock my scrapbooking addiction. it’s been too long since i’ve really bought anything papery.

if money were no object, i’d get candice olson from HGTV’s divine design to come to my house. currently she designs only in canada. i live in the beige cave. i need her help desperately.

i’m following you on twitter, blogging about this and twittering about it. hope you get lots of entries! wait…that doesn’t really work in my favor though, does it?! :D

    • 2009 October 2

Hello and welcome! As they have a little bit of everything, I would not be surprised to see scrapbooking materials among their items. I don’t scrapbook (hence the explanation of my blog), so I didn’t look for those items.

Beyond that, they have pictures, shelves and a lot of home interior design items – perfect for someone looking to spruce-up their home. And then they have clothes, shoes, purses, toys, some electronic items, fragrance items, kitchen appliances and dishes, car items, etc… Basically a little bit of everything.

Little Dude is going to be SO CUTE as Luke Skywalker! … We always go the cheap way out and get costumes from Walmart or Kmart… But then, considering the fact that we have to buy four costumes, it’s not really that cheap. *lol* … Of course, Jared is thinking about not doing it this year. He says he is getting too old. *sigh*

    • 2009 October 2

Hi Julie – I looked at the bargain stores, but it appears the prices are fairly similar to what I was finding online. I think it is because of the Star Wars brand name. Tell Jared he can still dress up and help hand-out candy at home, maybe?

If I had an unlimited budget, I would replace all the windows in my house, complete overhaul of the kitchen, new sofa, and a 54″ LCD flat screen TV.

If I had the 50$ gift card, I would buy shoes for myself ( I am a shoe-aholic), some stuff for my daughter, and a few nice clothes for my husband.

    • 2009 October 13

Hi Jill! I could stand to get a whole new furniture set in my living room,s o I hear you on the new sofa and such.

  7. 2009 October 2

Unlimited budget: New plantation shutters for all front windows in my house.

AJ Wright: Do they have an online store? We don’t have one here. But, if I won a gift card and there were an online store I would be shopping for long-sleeved blouses for ME.

    • 2009 October 13

No online store, sadly! But, I bet they would work with you somehow… As for the shutters – I dreamed of having them on our house, but the style just didn’t work.

  8. 2009 October 3

Unlimited budget huh? A laptop for myself, an iPhone or blackberry and the complete phone package to go with it, a new master bed, a trip to NYC, an awesome pair of jeans and boots and a purse to accessorize, new eyeglasses, and a TV for the kids’ new space. That’s just the tip of the ol’ iceberg, LOL.

$50 card? Shoes or a dressy winter jacket for me, a jacket for Beth, clothes for Chris, and I’m sure I could find something for Rob. Maybe some new bath towels. Goodness the list is long.

You know I don’t tweet or twitter, I’ll facebook the link and I’ll link on my blog after my party. :)

    • 2009 October 13

mrsvierkant – Didn’t I say only one thing? ;-) You could get several pairs of shoes, by the way – most were around the $15/pair price.

  9. 2009 October 3

If I were healthy (bad back) I would love to do some cruising and see Europe, France, Italy, Greece (this is fantasy now). But since I have take my health in consideration I would love to have new counter tops, new carpet/hardwood. I recently mentioned to hubby that there was a wonderful little computer on sale (more than a netbook but about the same size) and he said “order it – it can be your birthday present” (january). How fun – I’ve wanted one for years! And we added a pergola over our patio this summer which totally makes our back yard look great. And a new Yorkie puppy – Maddie is so cute. I guess I’m one lucky person…
As for AJ Wright gift card I would be buying some Christmas presents as I haven’t even started yet. I love gift giving. My friend Melly told me about this so I hope she gets her extra credit and I’d love for her to win – she’s a good person with a wacky sense of humor.

    • 2009 October 13

Welcome Robin! I would love to go on that type of trip and sorry to hear you have a bad back.

It appears improvements in the home/kitchen are a common wish!

  10. 2009 October 5

On an unlimited budget, I’d buy a huge, fully-stocked, horse farm!

On a $50 gift card, probably clothes.

    • 2009 October 13

Welcome Trek! Horse farm? Are you related to my younger sister in some way? ;-)

  11. 2009 October 5

With an unlimited budget, I’d splurge on a trip all around the world–a trip lasting, oh, say, the next twenty years. There is a LOT to see! :)

With a $50 gift card, I’d get some black dress shoes for myself. The last time I bought some was in the previous century, so it’s about time for an update!

    • 2009 October 13

Travel and home remodeling are the top votes, I would say! And with the price of shoes, you could get a pair of black dress shoes, a black purse and quite a few other things, too.

  12. 2009 October 6

Hummm… a splurge? I’d have to go with a classic response and say a shiny new BMW! (I’ve been eyeballing one that parks next to me at work everyday – LOL)

The $50 gift car would put me well on my way to a new pair of black heels to finish off my witches costume!! I’ve got some awesome black satin ribbon that I plan to wrap around the heels and up my legs for the perfect finishing touch!

    • 2009 October 13

Welcome Miranda! And this one is new – a BMW, eh?

You could get a lot more than the black heels, so good luck!

  13. 2009 October 7

There’s this Cuisinart panini/grill/griddle thing I’ve been eyeing. It has reversible plates that you can take out and throw in the dishwasher. I could’ve got it at Cosco for $65 but the husband vetoed (we were moving and already had enough stuff to pack) saying we’d come back and get it in a coupla months. They sold out, didn’t get any more and the cheapest I’ve seen it elsewhere is $120. sigh.

With the gift certificate, I’d probably get a nice set of BIG towels or a pretty comforter.

    • 2009 October 13

Welcome 5elementknitr! That Cuisinart thing sounds kind-of cool! I hope you find one someday, that is much less than $120.

They had lots of towels and comforters to choose from.

  14. 2009 October 9

I hear you when it comes to sticker shock! I bought an Annakin Skywalker costume for my son last year from eBay and insist that he use it again this year.

As far as AJ Wright, I could use some new dish towels, mine are 20 years old!

    • 2009 October 13

Glad to hear others are surprised at the prices of costumes. As for the Jedi Knight cape I purchased for my little guy, he will be encouraged to use it again, and again, and again, and again… until he outgrows it.

  15. 2009 October 9

Darn. “No stores found within a 100 mile radius of your zip code.”

    • 2009 October 13

Vered – I’m so sorry! Bummer!

  16. 2009 October 14

    Hi RC,

Ditto to what Vered said. No AJWrights close by.

Can I enter, and if I win, will you go shopping for me – maybe with a camera? :)

    • 2009 October 17

Barbara – I would get you whatever you wanted. Bummer on the no AJWrights close by…

  17. 2009 October 14

    Hey RC-

First of all, if money was not an option, I would immediately purchase a trip for my family to Disney. If I win the $50 gift card the kids will be styling with some new winter clothes. :)

I also posted your contest on a website (facebook), followed you on Twitter, and tweeted about your contest.

If I did this all correctly I think I earned all 4 entries. :)

    Thanks!

    • 2009 October 17

I’ve been waiting for you to sign-up, Julie! And yes, you all could add a little winter style for $50! (But more importantly, I’m following you to Disney…)
