Truly blessed

2009 August 2

Leaving the house this morning, I chanced to notice a stranger with one of Little Dude’s friends. Not really a stranger, but rather this little friend’s dad – a gentleman who has been absent from our neighborhood since the end of last year.

This dad has been stationed overseas, in service to the US.

As I watched him with his son, I got to thinking about how upset I get when I have a long day that limits the contact I have with my own son. Both the Hubby and I dislike the time taken from our family, due to our other commitments (although we both believe in the importance of the other commitments), especially on weeknights, when we have both spent full days working away from our most treasured gift – our son.

But we are home almost every night. We usually get to begin and/or end our days hugging and kissing our boy.

When I think about the amount of time our neighbor has been away from his son, who is just slightly younger than Little Dude, I can’t imagine the difficulties he and his family face, and I feel petty for being irritated with our long days.

To him, and to the many others stationed away from their families in service to their country – thank you.

Sadly, our neighbor is home only on a short break. I hope he has a great visit, and wish his next two and half months pass quickly and safely.

    Joining your wish too.

I know that I am very blessed (and probably a bit spoiled) by the amount of time I get to spend with my kids… I think I should be more thankful (I am thankful, of course, but I guess sometimes I forget just HOW BLESSED I really am!).

Vered – Thank you. I’m sure my friends will appreciate any and all good wishes they receive.

Julie – Thank you, as well! Like you, I forget how blessed I truly am, and tend to focus on what I’m missing. I’m blessed that truly, I’m not missing that much compared to so many others out there.

    Hi RC,

That’s a good point. We often forget to count our blessing.

Like you , Vered and Julie, I wish your neighbor well and thank him and the other service members for protecting our country.

This is a wonderful post. It should be shared on one of the sites that show support for our troops over seas. I, too, will add my wish to yours.

Barbara – It is so easy to take it all for granted. Thank you!

it is amazing to think of the things we take for granted.

with all of the political packaging as well, it is so easy to overlook the sacrifices people make. imaging giving up watching your child grow — to protect many you will never meet or know and who will never meet you either. also, many of whom will never give you and your efforts a second thought. so generous!
