Celebrating today

2009 June 4

celebrateTwo years ago today, I began blogging. (And this post is actually post #501 for those two years.)

As I’ve mentioned in the past, this blog was started to record events in our life, especially capturing the growth of Little Dude, to share with our friends and family. Over time, I’ve ventured into other subjects, made other friends via blogging, and lately I’m not certain in which direction I would like to take this blog.

My dilemmas:

  • Little Dude is growing up. As a Little Dude gets older, I find myself wanting to share less and less online, as I don’t want him being embarrassed when he looks back many years from now, at what I shared publicly in this forum. At the same time, I know some stories will just be too good not to share.
  • Free time is limited. I find that I’m spending more and more of my online time working versus playing. Those who know me, have even joked that I’ve been pretty quiet regarding Facebook status updates and Twitter updates (and that they might actually have to *gasp* call me to find out what is happening in our lives – thank you, Brenda!). I just feel that busy and tired lately, and I’m not feeling very witty when it comes to unique updates.
  • Writer’s Block. I have more rough drafts of posts than I care to count, right now. I start writing about something that Little Dude has done or about some brilliant thought I had, and suddenly it hits. I really hate it when a piece of writing doesn’t come out as I envisioned it in my head.
  • Hiding under a rock. I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m a natural introvert. I know, I know, I do a good job pretending to be an extravert – my career choice has been a big help in this area. However, when I’m feeling busy and social in the professional world, I need to pull back in my personal life. It is all about finding balance and finding time to decompress. For me, decompressing means putting away the computer, well, the internet, and reading a book or spending time with my little family. (And now that my son has a sandbox, I’m finding it therapeutic to read outside, while he happily serves me sand on a plate – okay, so he calls it “chicken nuggets.” Have to love his great imagination.)

    Sandbox

    The new sandbox.

Thank you to all who have joined me on this blogging journey over the last two years, and all who have given advice or sympathy when I’ve posted a question or a problem. Although I’m not certain where I intend to go in the future, I hope I continue to bump into you on the Web.

(Okay, this sounded an awful lot like this was my last post, ever, and I don’t think that is what I am planning, either… It might just be time for another blogcation. In the meantime, please feel free to follow me on Twitter, @RCRambling.)

Whatever you decide, I hope you continue to journal Little Dude’s milestones and discoveries in this format, whether personal or online. You always have it so beautifully written. Imagining HIM reading these stories as you tell them, that is SUCH a gift! He may be embarrassed when he’s 16, but will surely be grateful when he’s 30 :)

Happy Blogiversary! 501 posts are impressive! I’ll be lucky if I have 250 by the time my next blogiversary rolls around.

My two want me to start a family blog, so they can write. (Password protected, of course.) I’m debating it. It might be a fun summer project, but then a hassle once school starts.

There are always many options to consider.

Right now, I don’t twitter. I don’t know that I could keep up with it.

Do what makes you happy…but…I know you’ve read my blog and you know my posts usually aren’t lenghty, witty or impressive. And yours don’t have to be either. Although I do enjoy your sense of humor and your creative wit, you have to obligation to keep that momentum going if you don’t want to or have the time. But blogging is such a great way to capture life, even the little things, and to remember how life changes so quickly.

Congrats! It must be the season of blogiversaries! I am writing less and less about my 8-year-old son, even though he still enjoys seeing my posts about him. And now my daughter is starting to read, so I may taper off on her as well.. Darn it, and I’m stuck with the blog name “mommy bytes”!!

Keep up the great work and hope to see you blogging for many years to come.

So, I’m sad: I JUST found your blog. But, I’m happy ‘cuz you have so much to celebrate AND you continue doing what your heart is asking you to do.

Besides, I have a bunch of archives to read now!

    Best to you,

    -Chris

Do whatever feels right. (Although selfishly, I hope you stick around. ) :)

Blogcations are okay. It’s all about finding balance, like you said. Family and taking care of YOU should always come first.

  17. 2009 June 16

I’m late for the party, so I’ll say, “Congratulations as you enter year 3″.

As for what you should do, just follow your heart. It will steer you in the right direction.

In the meantime, keep enjoying life and your family.

    happy blogiversary!

i completely understand the need for a break…i haven’t been here as long as you have, but i too have needed time and distance from time to time.

i count myself as very fortunate to have met you here and to now count you as a friend.

be well and do remember that all things change and that is ok. as you change, your writing and your topic of writing will change — that is normal and completely ok.

    hugs,

    storm
