Could someone come carry me to my bed?
No matter what you read about Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, there is one piece of information I’ve been unable to find…
What do I do about the foot pain?!?!?!?!?
The mouth blisters? Painful and you lose your appetite, yes, but manageable. The hand blisters? Annoying and make me overly sensitive to any temperatures or textures, but again, manageable. The foot blisters? I JUST WANT TO CUT MY FEET OFF ABOVE THE ANKLES! SERIOUSLY.
I spent my day laughing at myself, or I would have been crying, as it has to be the most bizarre sight to watch me walk across the house at any given time. I look like I’m learning to walk or someone stole the walker I should be using, and I wince at the slightest misstep. We won’t even mention the screams of agony if someone, like a cute young man, accidentally steps on me or shoves a toy into my foot. It hurts so much! (Does anyone have a walker they would be willing to share for a bit? Just kidding…)
I’m not writing this to garner sympathy, as much as I wanted to share with parents this fact, just in case Hand, Foot and Mouth visits a child near to their hearts. Be aware that even if you can barely see a blister or two on the feet, chances are there are more, and yes, it truly hurts to walk – even just a little bit.
After going through this, I totally understand why Little Dude was so upset shortly after the rash/blisters appeared. This is total misery, and if I had someone to carry me, I would so be in my bed right now. But, I’m here in the office, getting up the courage to finish that walk to the bedroom, and giving my aching feet a rest.

My advise, stay in bed and get as much sympathy as you can. Call anyone that will be willing to help around the house. Give’em them guilt trip.
Hope you feel better!
my heart goes out to you. i do not think this has been your best summer. i would want to get under the covers and not come out. i am impressed at your energy and ability to persevere.
take care of you,
storm
Oh my, that sounds horrible. I wish there was something I could do for you! Take care of yourself!
OH YUCK! I feel so badly for you!
Get to a bed and stay there!!!!
Take care of yourself!
I hope you are feeling better!
Owie yowie! Can you slather your feet in calamine lotion or steroidal crean? Can you toss back a few margaritas? You poor thing! Moms should never be sick!
Man… That DOES NOT sound pleasant AT ALL. How long does it last?????
I just got this horrible hand foot and mouth disease from my little darling who had a milder version with no blisters at all, only fever, mild headache and sore mouth.
Instead I’ve got blisters all over my hands and feet. I can deal with the sore mouth, but I feel like chopping my hands off they are so itchy and driving me insane. I cannot turn keys, drive a car, open lids, hold a pen etc. I have no unblistered surface left on my fingers. Is there anything you did to relieve the itchiness? I’ve been holding my hands (and feet) into a bowl with icy water, but the relief only lasts a couple of minutes after removing them.
Mozzie bites stay very itchy for me for 3 – 6 weeks, not 2 – 3 days like other people. So I’m wondering how long I’ll be suffering these itchy blisters?
I’ve googled all the medical articles – they usually say these blisters are not itchy and that adults get a milder version of this disease if at all. Very untrue. That’s when I found your blog. I’ll be heading to the pharmacy tomorrow morning but I expect they’ll try to sell me useless stuff like stingose.
Hi there, I am 29 years and suffering from HFM on the soles of my feet. I sympathise with RC. I have literally been getting around on my hands at knees by the end of the day because my foot cannot take even slight pressure. My hubby even resorts to carrying me around when the distance is too far for me to get by on hands and knees! The worst is there are literally 3 little blisters on my sole and it really doesn’t look like much. I feel like such an idiot for how much pain I am experiencing!!! My doc prescribed a local anaesthetic cream called amethocaine for me as well as mybulen tablets. so far so good, it makes it bearable. At least I am more mobile now.
I am 20 years old and have been pretty sick this winter with an on an off cough i have realized that i have been getting cold soars not thinking much of it until it got really bad. My doctor told me that i had HFMD its the 4th or 5th day now and it hasn’t moved to my hands or feet but my mouth seems to be getting worse. The best advice i can give is to just get as much rest as possible. I have been really stressed which weakens your immune system, which is not good. So make sure to rest and try to get your body back to normal. I feel for anyone who is going through this, and those poor baby’s.
