Waiting for my computer miracle
I love the internet. Where else could I type in my woes, and end up with so many great, supportive comments? (Beyond telling my family, but they are kind-of trapped into being my support system. You can all leave whenever you would like.)
Anyhow, I’ll try to update you all by tomorrow on the status of my very precious data in my currently unusable, traitorous laptop.
My father, whom I love not only as my dad, but as my computer tech support, is trying to gather the necessary equipment as I type this, to fix the many bytes of memory holding a lifetime of information. (Seriously, Little Dude’s lifetime and a few years beyond!)
My dad is the original “lover of all toys electronic” in my family. I was brought up on an old TI (Texas Instruments – yes, the same people that brought you very reliable calculators, too!) computer, where we played many hours of Car Wars, Alpiner, Parsec (sp?), and many other games I can remember by sound and sight, but not so much by names.
I remember dad programming said computer to say, “Scooby Dooby Doo,” a phrase which made us all giggle, when uttered in perfect computer monotone voice, with horrible pronunciation.
And when dad found the programs to play music, “Suicide is Painless” (The theme from MASH), and “The House of the Rising Sun,” and both had very simple graphics – not the type of graphics you expect today, but graphics created through use of letters and signs – how thrilled we were!
Do you realize this computer used to hook up to an small black and white TV monitor? Oh yes, we were the tech-savvy family of the future back then!
Anyhow, that same father, who gave me my first TI calculator for a birthday present when I was under the age of 10 (I was thrilled and played with it in bed – the numbers lit up on the screen!), is going to try to repair my laptop.
May the happy technogeek vibes from my blogging friends and family shine down on him, and may all my data be retrieved.
(Special thanks to Mr Geek for volunteering his time/expertise via email, and Mamacheryl for offering her hubby if I just come up to visit her. You are both getting emails if things start to look evil.)

Sounds like your family is lightyears ahead of your time!
My dad is almost always my back-up tech support. This past Dec. he helped my replace a broken laptop hinge. I probably could have done it myself, but I was soooo nervous that I was going to break something that I was glad to have a second opinion and a steady hand.
Sending my good luck vibes… oh to be without your laptop… I would be lost!
Thanks for the memories.
I remember typing my senior term paper (way back in ‘87) Using what would become AOL for research. Couldn’t quite figure out how to put it in my bibliography and footnotes. Those were the days.
Hope it gets fixed. **fingers crossed**
Oh, my fingers are crossed for you! And, boy howdy, I remember those days, my dad was also a computer geek and we had all sorts of pre-internet. Fun times.
